Ascension St. Vincent and Goodman Campbell Launch Neurological Surgery Residency in Central Indiana

Posted

Ascension St. Vincent Indianapolis and Goodman Campbell Brain and Spine recently earned accreditation from the Accreditation Council for Graduate Medical Education for the hospital’s first neurological surgery residency program. Physicians from Goodman Campbell, one of North America’s largest neurosurgical practices, will serve as faculty for the program and bring more than 150 years of combined experience teaching residents. The residency program will offer unique medical practice models within a high volume Level 1 Adult and Pediatric Trauma Center at Ascension St. Vincent Indianapolis, along with a research division and exposure to an independent neurological surgery group.

“Goodman Campbell has always been focused on education, and given our long-standing relationship with Ascension St. Vincent, our team was eager to collaborate and establish a residency program with the renowned hospital system so we could continue training future generations of neurosurgeons,” said Goodman Campbell physician Dr. Richard Rodgers, Program Director of the new Ascension St. Vincent Neurosurgery Residency Program.

The Ascension St. Vincent Indianapolis Neurological Surgery Residency Program is eligible to bring in one new resident each year into their 7-year long training program, beginning July 2025. Throughout the program, residents will train alongside Goodman Campbell physicians to learn surgical techniques and patient care in both the outpatient and hospital settings. Instilling a deep commitment to both academia and research, residents will conduct their own research projects, and explore subspecialty options within the field.

Program Director Dr. Rodgers and Associate Program Director Dr. Charles Kulwin were instrumental in leading the team through the ACGME application process and will continue to provide oversight of the program.

“Our practice receives complex cases from around the state and across the Midwest, which provides a robust clinical and research setting that we are eager to share with neurosurgical residents,” said Dr. Kulwin.

As a partner of Ascension St. Vincent, Goodman Campbell provides 24/7 coverage for adult and pediatric trauma, stroke, as well as in the only Certified Brain Tumor Program in Indiana. In addition, Goodman Campbell provides treatments for other neurological illnesses affecting the adult and pediatric populations.

“Training a new generation of neurosurgeons here in Central Indiana is critical for the long-term health of our population and consistent with Ascension’s educational focus,” said Dr. Jeffrey Rothenberg, chief medical officer of Ascension St. Vincent Indianapolis. “We are grateful for the hard work and expertise of Goodman Campbell physicians in helping bring this program to life.”
