River Heritage Conservancy Receives Support to Advance Restoration in Buttonbush Woods

Posted

River Heritage Conservancy is pleased to announce that the Snowy Owl Foundation has awarded a $2,672 grant to support critical restoration work in Buttonbush Woods, one of Origin Park’s most ecologically significant natural areas.

This funding will provide specialized tools, protective gear, and equipment essential for invasive species removal and habitat restoration within the 103-acre forest. Buttonbush Woods is a biologically rich landscape, home to diverse plant and wildlife species and enjoyed by visitors who explore its trail system each year. However, invasive species such as bush honeysuckle and wintercreeper increasingly threaten the health and biodiversity of the forest.

The Snowy Owl Foundation grant enables Origin Park’s team to carry out targeted restoration efforts during the 2025–2026 winter season. These efforts will help work towards restoring ecological balance, protecting native plant communities, and enhancing habitat for local wildlife.

“Buttonbush Woods is a cherished natural space for our community and a vital part of Origin Park’s larger mission to restore ecosystems and expand access to nature,” said Dennis Schnurbusch II, Chief Executive Officer at River Heritage Conservancy. “We are grateful to the Snowy Owl Foundation for investing in the long-term health of this forest and supporting our commitment to responsible land stewardship.”

The restoration work carried out by trained staff will restore native vegetation, improve habitat quality, and ensure that the forest remains an accessible, healing space for nearby neighborhoods. Ongoing monitoring will assess progress and guide future stewardship efforts.

River Heritage Conservancy extends its sincere appreciation to the Snowy Owl Foundation for its partnership and commitment to environmental restoration, community well-being, and the future of Origin Park.
