Opportunity Enterprises (OE) is partnering with Ivy Tech Community College in Valparaiso to offer training in light industrial work through OE’s Vocational Training and Empowerment Center (VTEC). The program will create the opportunity for all qualifying individuals to experience a true post-secondary experience. Upon completion, students will receive an Ivy Tech certificate in Basic Production Principles.
To participate, individuals must first be deemed eligible through Indiana Vocational Rehabilitation. They then will enroll through OE and attend class at Ivy Tech’s Valpo campus. With a curriculum developed by OE in conjunction with Ivy Tech, classes will be conducted under the direction of VTEC and Ivy Tech instructors.
The partnership comes at a time when employers continue struggling to find qualified workers in the industry. VTEC, which offers training for individuals with intellectual and developmental disabilities in the fields of electronics recycling and refurbishment, custodial services and light industrial work, can help provide the solution.
“This is a partnership that can potentially benefit a lot of people and businesses throughout the region,” OE President and CEO Neil Samahon said. “Companies are struggling to find and retain quality employees that help their businesses run efficiently. VTEC students graduate and are ready to work. They know the job, they’re trained and they’re reliable. It’s an exciting opportunity.”
