Indy Developer Expands to Florida, Continues Growth in Central Indiana

Posted

Onyx+East, an urban residential builder located in downtown Indianapolis, announced it is extending its footprint into Florida and has a property under contract in Tampa, FL. Onyx+East has also hired John Bain as executive vice president of national operations to lead growth in Florida and other new target markets.

In addition to the Florida expansion, which is the company’s first foray into markets outside of Indiana, Onyx+East has seen exponential growth within its home state. Since Onyx+East spun off from Milhaus in 2015, it has invested $82 million in projects and begun construction on 215 units, including Park 10, 22nd & Alabama, and 13th & Central in Indianapolis and the Village of WestClay in Carmel. Onyx+East is also starting two more projects this spring: 59 units at 116th & College in Carmel and 35 units at 777 Bates in Fletcher Place. These projects will increase the company’s investment by $33 million.

In his new role, John Bain will be responsible for delivering the development, construction and sales strategic goals within all Onyx+East markets, including leading the day-to-day operations of the market teams and partnering with the development and investment committees to identify new markets and determine the product mix and design.

“John brings nearly two decades of senior leadership experience to our team, as well as insight and guidance on companies poised for immense growth. Onyx+East is one such company, and John’s expertise couldn’t come at a better time,” said David Leazenby, vice president of product and growth for Onyx+East. “We continue to pursue opportunities throughout Central Indiana, and we are expanding to burgeoning markets outside of the state. We’re glad to see John at the helm of the increased scope of our projects.”

Before joining Onyx+East, Bain served as the Indiana division president of R.T. Moore Company. He was instrumental in growing R.T. Moore’s revenue to the $100 million mark in 2017 and tripling the company’s employee numbers while continually improving bottom line performance and company culture. He also served as president of the Indiana Association of Plumbing-Heating-Cooling Contractors where he helped launch a nationally recognized workforce development campaign to promote skilled trades as viable career opportunities for the next generation.

“I’m glad to have joined the Onyx+East team and to be reentering the development homebuilding market. This field’s complexities provide a unique look into communities as you watch a project go from concept to completion and families turn ‘units’ into ‘homes,’” said Bain. “This market is full of opportunity and competition. I’m looking forward to being a part of Onyx+East as it grows in Indiana and beyond.”

A native of Indiana, Bain earned his bachelor's in building construction management from Purdue University.
