Indiana Strengthens Digital Infrastructure with $10B Meta Data Center

Posted

Indiana’s position in the digital economy gained new momentum recently with the groundbreaking of Meta’s $10B data center campus in Lebanon, Boone County.

Spearheading the project is Meta Platforms, owner of popular social media apps including Facebook, Messenger and Instagram. The company’s new data center campus will be located in LEAP’s Innovation and Research District, where the focus is on attracting companies in sectors such as biotechnology, pharmaceuticals and advanced manufacturing.

Plans for the campus include 13 buildings, including 10 data center facilities, as well as space for logistics, networking and administrative support buildings. The total project is projected to cover 1,500 acres.

The initiative is one more indication of the Hoosier state’s growing role in next-generation technology. According to Data Center Map, the state’s digital ecosystem is currently supported by 88 data centers, with 45 of them located in Indianapolis.

In a press release issued by Gov. Mike Braun, construction of the campus is expected to generate over 4,000 construction jobs. Once completed, he noted that the new campus will support about 300 permanent operational positions. In addition to high-wage job creation, the campus will also generate economic support.

Meta’s multiphase approach to constructing the data center campus includes community investment commitments tied to each completed phase. The company has pledged an annual $1.5 million for each completed phase of the projected six-phase project to support quality of place and workforce development initiatives in the region. Additional programs include grants and career exploration initiatives aimed at preparing local talent to support Indiana’s growing technological and digital infrastructure.

"Indiana has the business-first environment and the central location needed to support the global infrastructure of tomorrow’s economy,” said Gov. Braun in the release. “Meta’s significant investment in Indiana is a testament to our workforce and to our communities that will power its growth and its future here in Lebanon.”

The Lebanon project follows Meta’s first major Indiana data center, an $800 million, 700,000-square-foot facility in Jeffersonville. Meta broke ground on that center in 2024, and the project is nearing completion. Supporting both investments are the performance-based tax incentives by the Indiana Economic Development Corporation (IEDC). Meta’s incentives include a sales tax exemption of up to 50 years, contingent on meeting milestones in workforce and capital investment.

Meta’s new data center campus in Lebanon follows several other announcements for plans for new data centers in the state. In December 2025, Amazon announced plans to invest in a $15B data center in Northern Indiana. That development is in addition to an $11 billion investment in St. Joseph County that Amazon announced in 2024. Also late last year, officials in Michigan City approved resolutions that move forward plans for an $800 million data center there.
