City of Gary and Legacy Foundation Partner to Offer $500K Grant Funds

Posted

The City of Gary is partnering with the Legacy Foundation to administer funds given to the City by the federal government through the American Rescue Plan Act (ARPA). The City of Gary has approved $500,000 in ARPA funding to nonprofits serving residents of Gary, Indiana. Grants can be requested in the amount of up to $50,000, and proposals should focus on either:

  • The prevention or reduction of the spread of the COVID-19 virus.
  • Responses to negative economic impacts, due to COVID-19, on nonprofit organizations and the clients they serve.

“We are honored and excited to be collaborating with City of Gary officials on this important work,” said Kelly Anoe, President & CEO of Legacy Foundation. “These grants will provide support to local organizations who provided vital services to Gary residents during the worst of the pandemic, as well as through the recovery period and beyond.”

The American Rescue Plan Act (ARPA) is an economic stimulus bill passed by Congress to speed up the country’s recovery from the economic and health effects of the COVID-19 pandemic and the ongoing recession. This grant funding is part of $50 million received by The City of Gary to help bridge budget shortfalls and mitigate the financial shock of the pandemic.

“Nonprofit organizations have always played major roles in supporting the citizens of Gary, and we really saw them step up during the historic pandemic,” Mayor Prince said. “I cannot think of a better partner than the Legacy Foundation to assist us in utilizing a portion of our City’s ARPA funds to return just some of the support nonprofits have always provided our residents.”

The grant application will remain open until 5 PM CST on June 18, 2023. Qualified applicants must be a 501(c)(3) or 501(C)(19) tax-exempt organization, and projects should be geographically focused on Gary, Indiana. Priority will be given to organizations located in the City of Gary. An information session will be held on May 15, 2023. Learn more and begin your application at: legacyfdn.org/arpa-grant.
