Global Biopharma Services Company Investing $350M

The state of Indiana announced that Catalent Pharma Solutions, a global company enabling biopharma, cell, gene, and consumer health partners to optimize development, launch and supply of patient treatments, has commenced a significant multi-year expansion of its biologics manufacturing operations in Bloomington, including the creation of more than 2,300 high-wage jobs.

“Indiana’s vibrant and unique life sciences industry continues to make a tremendous impact on the Hoosier state through its economic strength, contributing more than $79 billion in 2021,” said Governor Eric J. Holcomb. “Indiana is making strategic investments in those businesses, like Catalent, to advance smart technologies and processes, and that investment has allowed Indiana to become the second largest exporter of life sciences products in the U.S. and is recognized as a world leader in the industry.”

Headquartered in Somerset, New Jersey, Catalent plans to invest $350 million to expand the Bloomington campus to support the growth of the industry’s robust biologics pipeline with new bioreactors, syringe filling lines, and additional lyophilized vial capacity, all supported by additional quality control laboratories and complex packaging.

Catalent has more than 17,000 employees across North America, Europe, Asia and Latin America, and over the last 16 months the company has already hired nearly half of its 2,000-employee commitment to the state, including manufacturing operators, production associates, quality technicians and lab technicians.

“Our continued growth in Bloomington demonstrates how important this site has become to the production of medicines for patients worldwide,” said John Chiminski, Chair and CEO at Catalent. “We are immensely grateful for our close collaboration with the state of Indiana, the city of Bloomington, and state and local economic development organizations. The talented, diverse Hoosier workforce and the ambitious business environment provide a strong foundation for our long-term presence in Bloomington.”

With more than 85 years of experience in drug development, delivery and supply, Catalent has helped countless developers by optimizing and manufacturing thousands of pharmaceutical, biologic, consumer health and beauty products. The company places patients at the center of its work to ensure safe, reliable supply and optimal product performance.

Catalent operates the 1,000,000-square-foot biologics development and manufacturing facility in Bloomington, which has rich expertise in sterile formulation and extensive biomanufacturing and drug product fill/finish capacity across liquid and lyophilized vials, prefilled syringes and cartridges.

“Catalent’s critical role in containing the COVID-19 pandemic has been global in scope, and their growing presence and positive impact here in Bloomington has been community-wide,” said Bloomington Mayor John Hamilton. “We sincerely appreciate the chance to work with an employer of this caliber who is choosing this place to make the largest investment in technology, equipment and new jobs in our recent history. As a city, we will keep laying the groundwork to help them continue to grow and thrive right here in Bloomington.”

The Indiana Economic Development Corporation (IEDC) has committed an investment in Catalent of up to $40 million in the form of incentive-based tax credits and up to $2.5 million in conditional training grants based on the company’s job creation plans to hire more than 2,300 employees by the end of 2023. The IEDC also committed an additional investment of up to $1.5 million redevelopment tax credits based on the company’s investment plans. These tax credits are performance-based, meaning the company is eligible to claim incentives once Hoosiers are hired and trained and investments are made. The city of Bloomington offered additional incentives. The Bloomington Economic Development Corporation (BEDC) has continued to provide strategic, advisory, and logistical support throughout this project.
