State-of-the-Art Melanoma Treatment Begins in Indiana

Community Hospital East, in Indianapolis, announced it will begin treating melanoma with the first-ever oncolytic viral therapy approved by the Food and Drug Administration.

This state-of-the-art treatment is for a select group of patients with metastatic melanoma and involves a genetically-modified version of the herpes simplex virus type 1 being injected into a tumor. Once inside a tumor, the therapy causes some of its cells to rupture and die, releasing antigens, which may create an anti-tumor response.

Community Cancer Center East is a multi-disciplinary cancer center with medical oncology, radiation oncology and surgical options. Center oncologists coordinate care closely with breast, gastrointestinal, urology, nephrology, lung disease and surgery specialists.
